Just fresh out of the meeting with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas City, we received some clarification on the available enrollment periods with regards to the new health care reform plans that will be available as of January 1st, 2014.
If you enroll before December 15th, 2015 your earliest effective date will be January 1st, 2014.
If you enroll between December 16th, 2013 through January 15th, 2014 your earliest effective date will be February 1st, 2014.
If you enroll between January 16, 2014 through February 15th, 2014; your earliest effective date will be March 1st, 2014.
As of our current understanding any application for an effective date after March 1st, 2014 will only be accepted with a qualifying event within a 60 day window such as:
- birth of a new child
- move outside of a plan area
- loss of coverage through work
- or a change in your subsidy level received
For those considering these options, some information to be aware of:
Your social security number will be required at the time of application due to the IRS reporting guidelines the insurance companies must follow. They now have to report to the IRS that you have a plan with them and that the plan qualifies for you to be in compliance.
If you choose a plan through the Federal Facilitated Marketplace, your monthly payment must be received and processed by the company before your effective date or the plan will cancel, and you may not have a oportunity to sign back up until a new enrollment period opens up.
