Experience The Arabia Steamboat Museum in Kansas City!

If you’re planning your trip to Kansas City, this historic attraction can’t be left out of your list. The Arabia Steamboat Museum is one of those unique attractions that offer great opportunities for creating wonderful memories and also learning a bit about the city’s history and past.

Going to the Arabia Steamboat Museum is like taking a trip to the mid-nineteenth century and seeing what life on the American frontier was like. This museum is the proud owner of the largest collection of pre-Civil War artifacts in the entire world, so you’ll be able to get in touch with all of the everyday objects that were part of the pioneer’s life in the 1800s.

The Missouri River is one of the longest in the United States and it has taken over 400 steamboats; one of these steamboats is the Arabia, which hit a tree snag just six miles away from Kansas City. The steamboat was fully loaded at the time of its demise against the river and it was carrying over 200 tons of cargo that was meant for general stores and homes in the frontier towns of the midwest.

What’s amazing about this cargo is that it was buried 45-feet deep under the Kansas cornfield for over a century and the lack of light and oxygen it received kept it well preserved until it was found by an ambitious archeologist armed with metal detectors and old maps. Today, it’s the most popular attraction in Kansas City and the favorite destination for visitors of the Historic City Market, which we have already discussed on a previous article, so make sure to give it a read.

This incredible museum is an attraction that will interest and engage people of all ages; even children will be amazed by the magic of walking into another era and seeing all of the artifacts that are on display. The museum doors are open for all kinds of visitors; families, groups of friends, RV groups, walk-ins and more, so you won’t miss the chance to experience the Arabia in full.

You’ll be happy to know that the collection is ever growing because preservationists continue to clean and work on 60 more tons of artifacts. In fact, you can watch them at work because the preservation lab is also available for visitors. This means that you’ll be able to experience the Arabia Steamboat Museum in Kansas City more than just once, and each time you come there will be something new to see.

You’ll find this magical place at 400 Grand Boulevard, in Kansas City, Missouri. They’re open from Monday to Saturday from 10 A.M. to 5 P.M., and Sundays from noon to 5 P.M.; keep in mind that the last tour starts at 3:30 P.M. and it includes a short film and explanation of the excavation of the Arabia and a visit to the preservation lab.
